【週刊英単語】tentatively, solemn, bolster, reach a consensus, up to, substandard [#14]

「毎日英単語」英語力アップ、先週の英単語を復習していきましょう。

英単語262日目, tentatively, hold

tentatively : 暫定的に

hold : 行う、開く

The school announced it is tentatively planning on holding graduation on April 11.
学校は4月11日に卒業式を行うことを暫定的に計画していることを発表した。

holdは”~を握る”という意味もあります。

solemn[sα’lэm] : 厳粛な、重苦しい

solemn gathering : 厳粛な集まり

in a solemn tone : 重々しい声で

名詞はsolemnity、副詞はsolemnlyです。色々な単語とセットになって出てきます。少し訳しにくい単語かなと思います。

bolster[bóulstər] : 支持する

bolster a close relationship
親密な関係を強化する

The health care system needs to be bolstered.
医療制度は支持される必要がある。

bolsterの発音[ou]には注意したいですね。

fail to : 出来ない、しそこなう

reach a consensus : 合意に至る

The company failed to reach a consensus on the terms of the deal.
その会社は取引条件において合意に至ることが出来なかった。

failの名詞はfailureです。

up to : 最高で～まで

The exhibition will be delayed by up to a year.
展示会は長くて1年遅れるだろう。

up toは”～次第”という意味もあります。byの表現も憶えておきましょう。

substandard : 基準を満たしていない、低水準の

This product is substandard.
この商品は基準を満たしていない。

standardは”標準”の意味になります。
